Control Techniques UD75 Overview

The Unidrive Classic unit UD 75 CT Net is a large option module device manufactured by Control Techniques. The UD 75 is a revision D hardware part fashioned to improve the performance of CT Net.  These products are manufactured in United Kingdom and are designed for Metal production, paper processing, and material conveying usage. They come with a 2-year warranty from MRO Electric. We also carry Option Modules from other manufacturers such as Siemens and Yaskawa.

What is the advantage of the UD 75 revision D hardware? The advantage of the Rev D hardware is an improved output driver resulting in higher voltage pulses. The Rev D also offers a higher impedance input stage which reduces the applied network load that each node experiences. The point of this is to increase the number of nodes used for a single network grouping.  Also increased is the length of cable allowed for use for a single network segment.  It is possible to increase the length of the cable used on the segment by reducing the nodes used on a segment.

The hardware used on the Control Techniques UD 75 Revision D applies a mathematical figure to determine if the node combinations and cable lengths that are applied to segment designs in the CNet meet the specifications meeting the specifications for the data rate required.

What are the data rates covered by the Control Techniques UD 75 Rev D unit?  The Rev D unit covers data rates of 5.0 Mbit/s, 2.5 Mbit/s and 1.25 Mbit/s.

Design of the CTNet sections and the Control Techniques UD 75

The layout of a typical CTNet network features either a single section or several sections linked together by a hub. A termination resistor is located at each section’s end.  Each section is limited by specific segment requirements.

Each segment on the CTNet is limited in its node and cable length capability. Because there is a limit to cable and node length and grouping size, the configuration can be checked.  Each segment is checked by calculating the segment load factor and insertion loss factor. The CTNet network continues to run smoothly as long as both the segment load factor and the insertion loss factor are within the design specifications.

Segment load factor and the Control Techniques UD 75

What does the segment load factor determine? It determines with max number of nodes available for connection on a single segment of the network no matter the network length. Note that when calculating the segment load factor and insertion loss factor you must count ports and hubs as a node for that particular segment or section.

How to check the segment load factor for suitability in a CTNet grouping

First, specify the data rate for the chosen network. Then you must determine the total number of Rev devices. Next, plot the point on the segment load factor graph where NRev C and D intersect. If the intersection is plotted above the specified data rate, then the operation cannot be guaranteed. You will have to split the segment (use a hub to split the segment). Repeat 1-3 for each segment. If the line intersects on or lower than the specified data rate, then it is within the specified limit for the segment.
